The Challenges of Mann
Field - Myanmar
MPRL E&P Pte Ltd. an
independent exploration & production company operates an onshore oil and
gas field namely Mann Field in Central Myanmar, with the Myanmar
National Oil Company ( Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise - MOGE ) under a
Performance Compensation Contract ( PCC ). The term of the contract is
fifteen ( 15 ) years and is valid until year 2014.
Mann Field was discovered in 1970 and reached peak production of 24,000
bopd in 1979. There are currently 663 Wells in the field, of which 328
are producing and the remaining are shut- in.
Mann oil field is situated on the northern plunging end of the 30 miles
( 48 km ) long Mann - Minbu structural trend in the proven oil province
of the Salin Sub Basin, part of the Central Basin of Myanmar. ( Approx:
Latitude N 20ֹ 7’ and Longitude E 94ֹ 50' ). It is an asymmetric
anticlinal fold and has a broad crestal portion. The dip ranges between
35 to 45 degrees at the east and 45 to 75 degrees on the west flank. The
dip of the plunge is about 8 to 10 degrees towards north. The field is
compartmentalized by 4 major NE-SW trending cross faults, namely B, C, D
and F. The southern part of the field is characterized by the presence
of the West Hading Thrust which swings in NNE direction at the crestal
and northern parts of the field. A series of NS trending back thrust
faults are prominently developed on the west flank of the structure,
forming many sub compartments and Mann Oil Field can be described as one
of the most geologically complex fields in the world.
The length and width of the producing area is about 10 miles ( 16 km )
and 1 mile ( 1.6 km ) respectively. Oil production is mainly from
sandstone reservoirs of Supra-Thrust Middle Oligocene and Early Miocene,
deposited under transgressive / regressive marine conditions. Mann Field
consists of 26 oil sands with total net pay thickness of 535 ft ( 163 m
).
The prospects of Sub-thrust and deeper part of Middle Oligocene
reservoirs are still being evaluated.
3D Seismic was acquired over the entire contract area in 1998.
Interpretation of 3D data has resulted in numerous leads or prospects
identified to date. There is extensive exploration potential on the
flanks of the structure as well as in the sub thrust, including untested
deeper horizons ( 8000 ft ).
Based on data from the current producing formation sands, and existing
production operations, remaining recoverable reserves are calculated at
10.7 million barrels.
Gains from existing well production are realized from a comprehensive
work over program, which includes the re-opening of old shut-in wells,
and the service and maintenance of equipment in existing producing
wells. To date MPRL has produced a total of 3,268,694 barrels of
Incremental Oil and 181,798 barrels of oil equivalent, in Incremental
Gas production. In order to capitalize on the potential of the deeper
formations as shown by the results of the 3D seismic, MPRL have recently
commenced both development and semi-exploratory drilling programs.
