New Opportunities

MPRL E&P Pte Ltd. formerly Myanmar Petroleum Resources Limited ( MPRL ) is a foreign independent exploration & production company. MPRL jointly operates an onshore oil & gas field namely Mann Field in Central Myanmar with the Myanmar National Oil Company ( Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise - MOGE ) under a Performance Compensation Contract ( PCC ).

In addition to the Onshore Mann Field Enhancement Project, MPRL E&P Pte Ltd. recently signed a PSC Contract with Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise to operate Offshore Block A-6. This Block, which covers an area of 9,830 square kilometers, is located on the western coast of Myanmar and is situated south of the recent gas discoveries made by Daewoo in Blocks A-1 and A-3.

The majority of personnel employed by MPRL for both the Mann Field and Offshore Projects are Myanmar Nationals who cover a variety of Geoscience and Engineering disciplines. MPRL is extremely proactive in providing travel, training, and further education for their staff, to ensure they are familiar with the constant changes and advances in technology and methodology that take place in the oil & gas industry.

Mann Field was discovered in 1970 and reached peak production of 24,000 bopd in 1979. There are currently 663 wells in the field, of which 328 are producing and the remaining are shut-in. Mann Field is an aging field having produced over 100 million barrels of oil, but it is still a long way from being fully depleted. Comprehensive 3D Seismic was acquired over the entire contract area in 1998. Interpretation of 3D data has resulted in numerous leads or prospects identified to date. There is extensive exploration potential on the flanks of the structure as well as in the sub thrust, including untested deeper horizons below 8,000 ft. MPRL has been involved in the Mann Field Enhancement Project since 1996 and to date has invested approximately US$ 90 million.

In order to further improve our understanding of the structural composition of Mann Field, MPRL continues to invest in new technology such as a recently upgraded workstation and new geophysical software, which has provided the Company’s group of Geoscientists with numerous attribute choices, when studying structural evolution and the environment of sediment deposition which controls the reservoir architecture.

Offshore Block A-6

The signing of the PSC Contract on 18 January 2007 for Offshore Block A-6 was a further step in the expansion of MPRL’s exploration and production activities within Myanmar.

Currently, MPRL is in a “Data Study Period" of the contract for Block A-6 and is reprocessing old seismic data which had previously been acquired in the Block.

MPRL has always been looking for opportunities to increase its exploration and production activities in Myanmar, and Offshore Block A-6 has provided the company with exactly such an opportunity.

Historically, over the past 10 to 15 years, the bulk of discoveries worldwide have come from deep water areas: Nigeria, Angola, Gulf of Mexico, Offshore Brazil and therefore the western coast of Myanmar is one of the last remaining deep water areas in the world which remains to be fully explored. The Shwe gas discovery and its origin in the Bengal Fan, the largest present day turbidite fan system in the world, has certainly helped to draw the attention of the industry to this essentially unexplored basin. The Myanmar Rakhine active plate margin is however tectonically much more complex than the passive margins of Africa and South America.

Accordingly, this is a challenge with an associated risk, which MPRL is attempting to mitigate in reprocessing some of the key seismic lines and to apply the latest concepts from Plate Tectonic Kinematics along the western margin of the Indian Plate, combined with a fresh and unbiased view of the onshore Rakhine geology.

To move from onshore into offshore, and possibly even deep water exploration, may seem a bold step for a small independent like MPRL but it was a logical development platform for the company as bids for additional offshore blocks were invited by the Ministry of Energy. It allows MPRL to grow, and the company was simply ready to take on the challenge. MPRL believes that there are still many opportunities to expand further in the country and MPRL has in fact applied for additional onshore acreage.
